This course focusses on introducing the concept of point-of-care ultrasound for trauma, triage, tracking, treatment and total systemic evaluation (the 5 T’s of POCUS) to the general small animal practitioner (even without any experience with ultrasound). The specialists will show how point-of-care ultrasound differs from the complete ultrasonographic examination performed by diagnostic imaging specialists and how any small animal practitioner can acquire the necessary skills to use point-of-care ultrasound in everyday practice. The theory is covered via 8 hours of online lectures (available on-demand) and covers the following topics that have conveniently been split up into four 2-hour sessions:
- The Essentials of Point-of-Care Ultrasound
- Abdominal Point-of-Care Ultrasound Examinations
- How to Examine the Lung and Pleural Spaces
- Pneumothorax, Pleural Effusion and Lung Pathology
- Cardiac Ultrasound Made Easy!
- Vascular Ultrasound – Estimating Fluid Status, Fluid Responsiveness and Fluid Overload
- Point-of-Care Ultrasound Case-Discussions and Self-Assessment
All sessions will include pre- and post-lecture cine loop interpretations to demonstrate participant learning and confidence building throughout the course.
The on-location portion starts at 2:30pm on Day 1 with 3 hours of interactive Case-Discussions, Q & A which will give attendees the unique opportunity to apply what they have learned during Lecture Series in discussion with the world-renowned specialists. Test wording added here. This will then be followed by the obligatory Wine and Cheese Reception allowing for attendees to socialise with colleagues and the speakers/instructors.
On the second day, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to train the different point-of-care techniques on live animals, cadavers and models and to get tips and tricks in small groups (2 – 4 attendees per ultrasound machine), under the supervision of the specialists. Each attendee will rotate through the following practical stations:
- Cardiac Point of Care Ultrasound
- Abdominal Point of Care Ultrasound
- Pulmonary (Pleural/Lung) Point of Care Ultrasound
- Cardiac, Abdominal and Pulmonary POC Ultrasound on Cadaver Specimens
- Ultrasound-Guided Vascular Access Techniques on Specimens
- Free POC Scan Session on Live Dogs
